UPVC windows, aluminium windows and timber windows each endure for differing periods of time.
The average lifespan of a modern double-glazed window is 20-25 years, but it’s not one-size-fits-all in this regard. Impacting factors on window longevity and performance include the choice of material, standard of installation, weatherproof construction (or not), product quality and maintenance.
Here’s some more on that…
What Determines Window Lifecycles?
Weather climate: Upon encountering regular adverse weather conditions, timber windows and low-quality UPVC windows tend to rapidly age unless correctly maintained.
UV exposure: Similarly, second-rate UPVC and timber windows installed at south-facing elevations often experience fading, warping, seal degradation and brittleness because of being subjected to strong sunlight.
Material quality: Window types containing first-class coatings, bulky profiles and superior glazing usually last longest.
Upkeep: Effective maintenance can extend the life and performance of windows.
Window Material Estimated Ages
Compared to traditional UPVC, a modern UPVC profile has much enhanced UV stability, so it won’t crack or become brittle and can last for 20-35 years or more.
30-45 years is the average lifespan of modern thermally broken aluminium windows, famous for having colossal strength. Aluminium requires minimal upkeep: occasionally, clean the frames and lubricate hardware.
Premium timber can potentially outlive the two other materials (30 year lifespan but can sometimes last 50-60 years) if you treat and maintain it. Hardwood windows are the densest, more durable and most moisture-resistant variety of timber windows.
Replacement Hints And Prolonging Life
Be alert to your windows collecting condensation in their double or triple-glazed units, draughts and air leaks forming, stiffness with window operation, frame mould or damp emerging, seals suffering damage and heating bills rising.
Improve window survival rates by cleaning the frames and glazing, lubricating moving parts, monitoring seals, gaskets, drainage channels and trickle vents and watching out for moisture or mould.
