Get Your Dream Front Door – Do You Buy Composite Or UPVC?

When you walk towards the doorstep of a home, it’s the front door that most often captures your attention, which highlights the importance of having a stylish entrance.

A front door’s style and condition can also hold sway over the appearance of a property, and, of course, is a fundamental component in keeping homes secure too.

UPVC doors and composite doors are two of the best-known replacement door styles if you’re ready for a front door upgrade.

Whilst most of us are aware of what a UPVC door is, not so many people are as well acquainted with composite doors.

What is a composite door?

Anything that’s described as ‘composite’ is made up of several elements, with a composite door being manufactured from UPVC, foam, wood, and a GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) skin.

Its wood grain effect is so convincing and looks so natural that you could be fooled into thinking a composite door is a full-on timber door, but it isn’t, and it’s so much more reliable than wooden doors.

Amongst a composite door’s biggest benefits is its strength and energy efficiency.

The different components of a composite door

The difference between composite & UPVC doors

Plastic is the only material used to construct a UPVC door, and a composite door frame tends to be thicker too (44mm is the average depth of a composite door, compared to around 28mm for a UPVC design).

The higher cost of composite doors is all to do with them being fabricated using multiple materials, as opposed to just one.

While UPVC doors cost less, they still provide a superb modern standard of thermal and secure performance.

How to clean and maintain composite & UPVC doors

Their door frames only need cleaning every four months and you can do it with warm soapy water and a soft cloth – never use abrasive materials or solvent based cleaners.

Lubricate the hinges, locks, and if they need it, handles and door furniture, once a year.

The threshold and drainage holes of the door should be kept free of debris so that water cannot get into the seals – keep a really close eye on this during prolonged spells of wet weather.
