Keen to know a standard external front door’s size?
Our door knowledge is unsurpassed, so you can believe us when we tell you that there isn’t a single standard door size in the UK, just a range of sizes used by homeowners and door manufacturers.
2’6” (30 inches or 762mm) is England and Wales’ most common door width, while in Scotland, where doors are generally a bit narrower, they measure around 28.5 inches (726mm).
Ask an installer what they would class as a ‘standard’ door and you will find that the answer varies between suppliers, largely due to how they fit products and what they offer to customers. Doors are all standard to Mitchell Glass, as we always craft bespoke solutions.
The Standard Internal Door Sizes For Most UK Homes
To this day, standard internal door sizes in the UK are still given in metric and imperial naming systems. If you come across a door at an old building that’s “2 ft 6”, the metric equivalent of this is 762 mm, as some suppliers prefer to state.
The imperial sizes of 2’3”, 2’6” and 2’9” are popularly used in England and Wales, but Scotland likes to employ metric measurements, especially where newer homes are concerned and 2040 mm tall doors are involved.
You may find our table of common standard door sizes easier to comprehend, which outlines width and height in metric and imperial measurements.

Standard External Front & Back Door Sizes
Front and back doors in the UK have largely consistent standard sizes, with a common door dimension starting at 1981 mm in height and width ranging from 610 mm to 926 mm.
These sizes generally observe traditional door openings, removing any problem adding a replacement door.
Not forgetting the 2040 mm tall series, well-liked in Scotland. This is predominantly used in the country’s new-builds, widely chosen by those after a modern and lofty finish. Refer to the following table to uncover where each size is largely exercised.

Standard Door Sizes Per Material
The choice of door material will impact height, width and the overall slab thickness.
44 mm to 56 mm is the average size range of timber doors, with composite doors normally around the 44 mm to 70 mm mark and UPVC door slabs being noticeably slimmer in most cases.
Apart from their contrasting aesthetics, each door material offers a different level of insulation and security. The below table highlights this more clearly, neatly breaking down common door sizes and materials in a simple-to-follow chart.
