How New Windows Transformed a Galashiels Home on a Busy Road
One of our favourite things about being part of the Conservatory Outlet network is the recognition of our projects. One recent project nominated at Conservatory Outlet’s awards was this installation at Mrs Moir’s home in the Scottish Borders.
Mrs Moir was desperate for peace and quiet at her home in the heart of the Scottish Borders
Mrs Moir’s home, which is situated on a busy main road in Galashiels, faced persistent noise issues, minor warmth concerns, and a desire for a fresher, more colourful frontage.
Everyday life was affected – Mrs Moir’s dog would bark at passersby, and the previous tilt-and-turn windows posed security limitations, as they could never be safely left open. She turned to the team at Mitchell Glass.
By focusing on the precise needs of the homeowner, we turned multiple challenges into a seamless solution that elevated both comfort and lifestyle. The solution combined noise reducing windows which were top-hung units with acoustic laminate glass over fixed panels, dramatically reducing noise while maintaining a stylish, airy feel.
A 70mm double-rebate door completed the ensemble, personalised with a subtle sandblasted family joke in the top light, adding a touch of warmth and character.
While triple glazing was initially considered, a detailed assessment carried out by the Mitchell Glass team identified sound mitigation as the priority, resulting in a solution that perfectly balanced performance, aesthetics, and functionality.
The results speak for themselves: Mrs Moir can now enjoy a quieter, more secure home in Galashiels, with enhanced visual appeal, and a living environment that truly supports her wellbeing and keeps her dog feeling more relaxed too. As she’s on the main road, Mrs Moir has even said she’s had many friends and family drive past and call her to compliment her new windows and doors.
This project is a perfect example of how considered design can elevate daily life, and it was proudly nominated for Best Window Install at the CO Awards.
