Important Points About Conservatory Roof Replacements

Summer weather finds itself inside a lot of conservatories, namely those with old roofing systems. If yours gets too hot to handle, you need a roof upgrade.

Find out how to spot the signs of a failing roof, what roof replacements are offered, and whether you need planning permission to switch conservatory roofs.

Conservatory Roof Red Flags

There’s a series of problems that can emerge with ageing roofs and they need identifying early to avoid a totally failed system.

  • Leaking. Roofs often start to leak once deterioration occurs.
  • Sagging. If a roof sags at any point, it’s a result of structural weakness, poor installation or debris buildup.
  • Discolouration. Weathering, moss and algae growth can bring on discolouration.
  • Water ingress. The manifestation of cracks in panels or seals increases the likelihood of water ingress.
  • Mould. Don’t let mould fester as it is a structural and health risk.
  • Damp and condensation. Inadequate roof insulation or ventilation may prompt damp and condensation.
  • Moisture. A deficiency of insulation is also a catalyst for moisture.

Conservatory Roof Replacement Options

  • Modern glass roofs. Pioneering glazing is a constituent of most modern glass roof replacements and plays a key role in its exceptional insulation.
  • Tiled and solid roofs. A solid tiled roof delivers supreme thermal performance, and its lightweight design makes installation quick to conduct.
  • Hybrid roofs. Hybrid coverings encompass a combination of solid, insulated panels and glass sections. Uniting the two provides balanced light and insulation.
  • Polycarbonate roofs. The least expensive solution is the polycarbonate roof. Durable it may be, but it comes nowhere close to rivalling modern tiled and glass roofs.
  • Roof lanterns. An unmissable architectural feature in extensions and contemporary conservatories, roof lanterns include solar-control glass to harvest comfort.

Planning Permission and Building Regulations

Conservatory roof replacements can generally proceed with planning permission as they are considered permitted developments.

That’s not the case though if a roof upgrade would entail major alterations to an existing space or the relevant house is listed or in a conservation area.

Roofs must adhere to Building Regulations. For example, you’ll need to submit a Building Regulation Application if fitting a solid roof to an existing conservatory.
